As our nation marks its 250th anniversary, this collection celebrates the people, places, and moments that helped shape both Wilmington and the American story. Over the past two and a half centuries, Wilmington has played a meaningful role in the growth of our country and remains deeply connected to its earliest history.
During the American Revolutionary War, George Washington and his troops spent time in Wilmington. Among the local residents was Joseph Tatnall, a Quaker who chose not to take up arms. Instead, he supported the soldiers in a practical and generous way by supplying flour during their stay. His contribution reflects a long tradition of civic spirit, resourcefulness, and quiet generosity that continues to shape Wilmington today.
Proceeds from purchases in this collection will help support the development of the Superfine Museum in the Street, preserving these stories and sharing them with future generations. We are grateful to Francie Chalfant and to everyone who has helped bring this history to life.
